Thiruvananthapuram International Airport (TRV) has completed Phase 1 of the domestic terminal (T1) redevelopment, officially opened to passengers on February 11, 2026. The upgrade includes a significantly expanded canopy for better weather protection and reduced congestion, a modernized terminal façade, smoother passenger flow from curb-side to check-in, and an expanded parking area that is already operational. The facility was inaugurated by senior airport leadership as part of ongoing service enhancement efforts.
What is Project Anantha and What Does It Cover?
Project Anantha is the ₹1,300-crore master redevelopment plan currently under full execution at TRV. While the terminal facelift addresses visible land-side improvements, what happens beyond the terminal building? Phase 1 of the broader project focuses on critical air-side infrastructure, including drainage systems, underground cable networks, and apron redevelopment near Terminal 2. These essential upgrades are on track for completion by late 2026.
Phased Development Plan
The redevelopment is being implemented in structured stages. Phase 1 focused on the entrance redesign and canopy expansion and is now complete. Phase 2 will begin shortly, concentrating on interior modernization with additional check-in counters and upgraded seating areas. Phase 3 will introduce enhanced retail and dining outlets along with improved baggage handling systems to further strengthen passenger convenience and operational efficiency.
Capacity Growth and Future Expansion
Originally designed to handle 1.3 million passengers annually, TRV is currently managing around 3.2 million passengers per year. In January 2026, the airport recorded its highest-ever monthly traffic, exceeding 450,000 passengers.
Together, these developments position TRV for sustained aviation growth while strengthening its role as a key travel and business hub in the region.
