Redevelopment of Thiruvananthapuram Central Railway Station: Project Overview

Redevelopment of Thiruvananthapuram Central Railway Station: Project Overview

The large-scale redevelopment of Thiruvananthapuram Central Railway Station, the primary rail gateway of Kerala’s capital, is moving ahead at a steady pace with an approved budget of ₹495 crore. The project is designed to transform the station into a modern, passenger-centric transit hub aligned with international standards.

Construction Scope and Structural Progress

The redevelopment has been divided into two primary construction zones to enable parallel execution and faster delivery:

  • North Block (Thampanoor side): Dedicated to passenger circulation, concourse development, and upgraded public facilities
  • South Block (Power House Road side): Planned for administrative offices, passenger amenities, and support infrastructure

Piling works for both blocks have been fully completed, and foundation construction is currently progressing simultaneously at each end of the station.

Passenger Access and On-Ground Adjustments

Ongoing construction has required temporary changes to passenger movement within the station precinct. Entry and exit points have been rationalised to ensure safety and uninterrupted work execution.

  • Passenger access through Power House Road remains closed
  • All passenger movement is currently routed via the Thampanoor entrance
  • Sections near the escalator on one platform have been temporarily covered to facilitate structural work

While these changes have caused short-term inconvenience, railway authorities have indicated that the measures are necessary to maintain construction timelines.

New Facilities and Operational Enhancements

Several supporting facilities are being developed alongside the main station buildings to improve long-term operational efficiency:

  • A multi-level car parking structure near the second entrance is nearing completion, with interior finishing underway
  • A dedicated running crew retreat building has already been completed on the Power House side
  • Relocation of running staff from the Thampanoor-side offices to the new facility is currently in progress

These additions are expected to ease congestion and streamline station operations once the project is commissioned.

Project Execution and Supervision

The redevelopment is being executed by Rail Vikas Nigam Limited (RVNL) in collaboration with Kerala Rail Development Corporation Ltd. Overall supervision and quality control are being handled by the Southern Railway Zone. The project aims to elevate the station’s architectural identity while delivering improved passenger flow, accessibility, and service standards.

Suburban and District Station Developments

In parallel with the Central station works, multiple suburban and district stations in the Thiruvananthapuram region are being upgraded under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme:

  • Varkala Sivagiri: Around 90% of the main building work completed; new FOB superstructure under construction
  • Neyyattinkara: Civil works nearing completion, with minor delays linked to access road development
  • Chirayinkeezhu: Fully completed and inaugurated
  • Kazhakkuttom and Pettah: Platform upgrades, new shelters, seating improvements, and passenger amenities completed

These upgrades are aimed at improving daily commuter experience across the suburban rail network.

Rail Infrastructure and Future Connectivity

Several strategic rail infrastructure projects are progressing alongside station modernisation efforts:

  • The Thiruvananthapuram–Parassala track doubling project has reached approximately 70% completion and is expected to be operational by August 2026
  • Balaramapuram station development is being prioritised to support the future rail tunnel link to the Vizhinjam International Seaport
  • Thiruvananthapuram Metro Phase I has received final alignment approval, with planned interchange stations at Kochuveli, Central, and Kazhakkuttom

These projects are expected to significantly strengthen regional connectivity and multimodal integration.

Overall Outlook

With major station redevelopment, suburban upgrades, track doubling, port connectivity, and metro integration progressing simultaneously, Thiruvananthapuram is undergoing a comprehensive transformation of its rail infrastructure. Once completed, the redeveloped Central Railway Station is expected to emerge as a modern transport hub that reshapes the city’s mobility landscape and enhances the overall travel experience for passengers.
