Neyyar Dam was constructed in 1958 across the Neyyar River, at the foothills of the Western Ghats. The surrounding Neyyar Wildlife Sanctuary is rich in biodiversity and is home to elephants, deer, birds, and other native species. It also houses a Crocodile Rehabilitation and Research Centre.
The area serves as a starting point for treks to Agasthyakoodam, one of the most sacred and ecologically important peaks in Kerala.
