Varkala Beach is unique in southern Kerala for its dramatic red laterite cliffs that rise directly above the Arabian Sea. This rare natural formation has been recognized as a National Geological Monument.

The beach is traditionally known as Papanasam, meaning “removal of sins.” According to belief, bathing in its waters brings spiritual cleansing. Adding to its importance is the ancient Janardhana Swamy Temple, believed to be over 2,000 years old, located close to the beach.
