KWA Plans New 100 MLD Water Plant for Thiruvananthapuram

KWA Plans New 100 MLD Water Plant for Thiruvananthapuram

The Kerala Water Authority (KWA) has proposed a 100 million litres per day (MLD) water treatment plant at Aruvikkara to support Thiruvananthapuram's growing water requirements. The project is part of the authority's long-term plan to strengthen the city's water supply infrastructure as the capital continues to expand. According to the preliminary engineering report, the project includes the construction of a 1,200 mm transmission main connecting Aruvikkara and Peroorkada. The new transmission line is expected to replace an existing abandoned pipeline, minimizing the need for additional land acquisition. The proposed project carries an estimated investment of ₹196.26 crore. The new facility will add 100 MLD to the city's existing 370 MLD water supply capacity, helping meet the increasing demand from expanding residential areas and major growth corridors, including Technopark and the Vizhinjam International Seaport.

KWA has identified the Aruvikkara plant as the first phase of its future water supply development plan for Thiruvananthapuram. The proposed 120 MLD Neyyar water supply scheme has also been planned as the next phase, providing an additional source to support the city's long-term water needs. The proposed treatment plant is linked to plans for enhancing the storage capacity of Peppara Dam, the primary source of drinking water for Thiruvananthapuram. As part of the overall water management strategy, KWA has proposed increasing the dam's storage level to strengthen water availability for the city in the coming years. In addition to expanding treatment capacity, KWA is also focusing on improving the efficiency of the water distribution network by addressing non-revenue water (NRW), which refers to treated water lost during transmission. Strengthening the distribution system is expected to improve the overall performance and reliability of the city's water supply network.

Once implemented, the proposed Aruvikkara water treatment plant will represent a significant addition to Thiruvananthapuram's water infrastructure, supporting the city's future growth and ensuring a more robust and sustainable water supply system.
